Burgh Island Causeway and the Beach
Bigbury-on-Sea’s beach at the mouth of the River Avon is one of
South Hams’ most stunning and was awarded a Blue Flag in 2003. There are
acres of clean, golden sand at low tide (half the beach is dog-friendly in
summer, all in winter). It is perfect for sand castles, cricket and kite flying,
and exploring rock pools. The water is good for paddling, swimming
(lifeguards on duty in the summer) and, for the more adventurous, there is
tuition in surfing or windsurfing with all equipment provided.
And, if you are lucky, you may see dolphins in the bay.

At high tide the beach is washed by the sea and Burgh Island can only be reached by
sea tractor — a unique experience. The island is well worth a visit for
dining,
with its Art Deco hotel made famous by Edward and Mrs Simpson, The Beatles, Noel Coward
and Agatha Christie; who wrote two of her novels there, and the jolly good food pub
there — The Pilchard (dating back to 1336, that is the pub not Agatha Christie!).
Bigbury is on the South Devon Coastal Path, between the beautiful rivers Avon and Erme. Originally a footpath to allow coast guards to patrol the beaches and inlets against smugglers, the path hugs the cliff tops and offers incomparable views across to hidden coves. There are also gentle rambles inland on pretty footpaths.
For golfers, Bigbury has one of the finest eighteen-hole courses with wonderful sea views.

The Bigbury on Sea village Post Office & Stores, which is located 400 yards away, can deliver groceries to the apartment on the day of your arrival — Click here to order. For opening times and contact details for the store see their web pages. They also have a free to use ATM inside the shop.
