Farmers' Markets
A farmers' market is an ideal way to talk direct to the producer and taste before you buy. It’s a fun way to buy vegetables, fruit, fish, meat, cider, cheeses, cakes, bread, plants and much more. South Devon has a market every Saturday.
- Kingsbridge – 1st & 3rd Saturday each month
- Totnes – Friday and Saturday every week, plus Tuesday from May to September an Elizabethan market.
- Dartmouth – Every 2nd Saturday morning from February to October
- Ivybridge – Thursday Glanvilles car park, Leonards Road
Modburyis the nearest holiday town for all your holiday shopping needs with cafes, pubs , and restaurants and is characterised by local butchers, bakers and delicatessens. There is a convenient car park off the main street. Modbury was the first English plastic bag free town! Try the "Top o' The Steps" cafe on Church street, after shopping.
Kingsbridge is the nearest town for two decent sized supermarkets — Tesco and Morrison's and a cinema. The town itself is full of character with arcaded shops, art galleries, a pillared market house and boats on the tidal river. Car parks are at each end of the steep main street — Fore Street. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants.
Salcombeis a fashionable fishing village with steep narrow streets and some high quality shops, souvenir and boating shops, teashops and pubs. You can hire a boat or take a boat trip from there. It gets very congested and parking is difficult from mid to high season.
Plymouth City has an historic and large pedestrianised shopping centre with all the major chain stores represented. There are great views of Plymouth Sound where you can walk in Drake's footsteps on the Hoe. Plymouth has plenty of car parks, a cinema, a theatre, and attractions to visit e.g. the UK largest aquarium at the National Maritime Aquarium.
Dartmouth is a charming small waterside town with exceptional buildings , interesting boutiques and individual shops, lots of river attractions and is particularly photogenic. Dartmouth stays alive in the winter months with many great eateries — try the excellent Italian cuisine and great surrounding at the Dartmouth Apprentice. The Dartmouth Steam railway and river is a great base for river and train trips. Parking can may take some time in high season.
Totnesis a charming town with an interesting Elizabethan area. Shopping has a new age flavour and originality. It is a terminus for Dart river trips and the South Devon Railway. Totnes also has a mainline rail station. Ample parking is at each end of the town.
